Summer Reading Visits to Magdalena and Socorro

Carmelita Aragon and I were happy to continue visiting Summer Reading Programs with a trip to Magdalena Public Library and Socorro Public Library on a beautiful day in mid-July. Both libraries were welcoming the ABQ BioPark Aquarium outreach van as a part of their summer programming on that day – and a great tip from both directors is that this allows them to receive a discount on the cost of the program!  If you have another library within close proximity to you, consider this idea.

At Magdalena, Director Ivy Stover gave us a brief history of the library and their historic Santa Fe boxcar which enlivens the outdoor patio.  Summer reading participants not only got to see live animals but have an important lesson on keeping pollutants out of our waterways – all water heads to the ocean!

In Socorro, Director Chelsea Jones and Youth Librarian Kathy Spring were overseeing a robust gathering of summer reading families – live animals are always a hit!  I was impressed by their youth spaces – including cozy wall reading nooks.

Getting out and meeting our library staff and seeing our New Mexico libraries is a great benefit of my job – and an important means of building relationships with our state-wide library staff.  As our Summer Reading Program winds down take time to celebrate your accomplishments!
