Is it time for a NM State Poet Laureate?

PoetLaureate

We invite your ideas, recommendations, and opinions!

During the 2014 Legislative session, Senator Bill O’Neill and Representative Brian Egof sponsored memorials (which passed easily) requesting that the NM Department of Cultural Affairs study and present recommendations for establishing a New Mexico State Poet Laureate.

At the center of our process, the NM Department of Cultural Affairs is reaching out statewide to poets, writers, professors, publishers, readers, arts leaders, and community members! We want to hear from you as we draft a plan for establishing a New Mexico State Poet Laureate which includes the selection process, the responsibilities/role of the Poet Laureate, and support for the position.

We hope you can participate in any or all of these ways:

1.  Share this information with your own poetry-loving community.

2.  Help us organize a community meeting outside of Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

3.  Participate in our online survey (which will be available on July 1).

4.  Join or stay on this mailing list for occasional updates – your involvement is important as we move forward.

For more information, please contact Dr. Shelle Sanchez, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Development, NM Department of Cultural Affairs, shelle.sanchez@state.nm.us, 505.469.3399.

Email Jamie Brytowski at jamie.brytowski@state.nm.us to RSVP for one of the community meetings.
