Employment Opportunity: Temporary Children’s Librarian, Bloomfield Public Library

The Bloomfield Public Library is accepting applications for a Full-Time, Temporary Children’s Librarian.

Duration: Starts Mid-April to September 30, 2022

Wage:  $13.00 – $17.89 hourly

Full time Temporary Position: M – TH 8 – 6 / 10 hour days

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and Coordinate Weekly Children’s Storytime
  • Plan and Coordinate Summer Reading Program
  • Outreach / Marketing to Daycares / Local Schools

GENERAL PURPOSE

Works under the general supervision of the Library Services Director performing coordination of Children’s Department duties as needed to expedite the delivery of public library services, including programming, circulation, periodicals, collection development and acquisitions.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Provides general supervision to children’s department activities and volunteers on a project-by-project basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs complete circulation support duties; checks for damaged materials; retrieves book-drop materials; operates computer to enter and update patron records; identifies patron status in relation to obligations, i.e., fines, and communicates the same to patrons; follows established guidelines in allowing waiver of fines; takes and processes library applications, and issues library cards

Assists patrons with computer operations; provides general reference assistance; assists with computer classes as needed; performs regular upkeep on library equipment and machines, i.e., photocopiers, computers; assures proper supply of paper, replaces toner, removes paper jams, etc.; provides general instructions to patrons in equipment operations; sends and receives fax communications.

Acts as a reference librarian; provides general assistance to patrons by directing them to various locations in the library as needed; performs as a telephone operator on a regular library shift; receives and routes telephone calls in assisting the calling public.

Acts in a supervisory capacity in the children’s department, assists with the on-going monitoring of children’s collections or special function (i.e., interlibrary loan); performs general collection upkeep and maintenance; repairs damaged materials, discovers and replaces missing items; in-process new materials (i.e., periodicals), assures proper labeling and completes computer documentation verifying collection status; assists patrons submit interlibrary loan requests; monitors requests and packages materials for return as required.

Develops and presents, with assistance from other staff, children’s programming for the library. Has major role in developing preschool, school, and teen programming for the summer with emphasis on the annual summer reading program.

Performs general and routine duties related to the sorting, shelving and re-shelving of library collection materials, including books, magazines, newspapers, multimedia, etc.; performs shelf reading to monitor the accurate placement of materials; monitors collection for damage and needed repairs; perform routine mending, etc.

Develops and maintains effective community, municipal, and media relations; establishes and maintains relationships and alliances as needed to promote and accomplish organizational mission and objectives, communicates official plans, policies and procedures to management, staff and the general public.

Performs routine materials filing; assist the public with technology; assists with the preparation and mailing of overdue and billing notices; sorts items for delivery to correct location in the system.

Participates in general library housekeeping, participates in children reading programs; sets up display windows and cases; creates promotional material, flyers, posters, bookmarks, signage, displays, and decorations for events.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Education and Experience: Graduation from high school; plus two (2) years of specialized training, Bachelor’s Degree, or an Associate’s Degree in Library Science, general studies, or related field; AND Two (2) years of children’s library experience performing above or related duties; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of library reference, circulation, cataloging and classification methods, practices and procedures; Dewey Decimal System; various areas of specialization of material related to different patron groups; reader interest levels; interpersonal communication skills. Some knowledge of various specialty routines, methods, processes and procedures related to circulation, periodicals, and technical services; software applications, i.e., Microsoft Office; Publisher, various types of inter-related equipment, specifications and compatibility; specialized library system elements, i.e., INNOPAC, OPAC, MARC records, subject headings, authority records, Boolean searching, etc. Ability to perform general clerical functions quickly and accurately; understand and follow written and oral instructions and work independently in carrying out work assignments; adhere to a prescribed routine; operate various office machines, computers and equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationship with fellow employees and patrons of all ages; communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  3. Special Qualifications: Previous experience as a children’s librarian or working in a public library summer reading program.
