Youth & Adult Services/Outreach Librarian FLSA: Non-Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Perform highly responsible, professional library work that includes the planning, organizing, and directing of the Teen library collection and programing. Work under the supervision of the Library Director. Provide library services to adults and teen; including reference, reader’s advisory, programming, community activities, and collection development; work with staff to monitor and evaluate services to adults and youth; promote and publicize the teen services and other library programs in the schools and the community. Duties are conducted with independent judgment and initiative and is performed in accordance with the policies of the Belen Public Library and the Library Laws of the State of New Mexico.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Follow the policies and procedures as set forth by the City of Belen.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate innovative services and educational programming for teens that:
    • Empower and motivate young people;
    • Promote and nurture the habit of reading;
    • Introduce students to the latest electronic resources;
    • Engage young people and help them develop their creativity.
  • Attend the necessary trainings and workshops for the planning of Summer Reading Programs, and any other educational programs suggested by the Library Director.
  • Operate, publicize and manage the Teen Summer Reading Program, including enrollment and tracking of SRP participants and evaluation of experiences.
  • Work with schools and community organizations in the Library’s service area to ensure mutual communication and collaboration, including school librarians, teachers, administrators, and other paraprofessionals, for programs and events both in and outside of the library. In collaboration with colleagues and interested parents and educators, plan, schedule, and arrange teen education and literacy programs, and build programs to link the library to community groups.
  • Provide a full range of teen and adult services to the public, including regularly scheduled
    after-school programs, and guidance to patrons in the Teen section of library.
  • Interview customers to determine information needs; decide appropriate search strategies;
    provide answers to routine and complex reference questions in print and electronic formats;
  • Assists patrons in the use of library computers, printers and copiers;
  • Plan, schedule, and arrange library services for those who are infrequent users or nonusers
    of the library or services for those who are traditionally underserved, including poor and
    homeless people, ethnically diverse people, older adults, adult new and non-readers,
    Veterans, incarcerated people and ex-offenders, people with disabilities, LGBT populations,
    and rural and geographically isolated communities.
  • Mindfully choose resources to enhance the Adult and Teen library collections.
  • Ensure that each individual patron receives the highest possible standard of customer
    service.
  • Staff public service desks and evening/weekend programming as needed.
  • Maintain and report high-quality, accurate data about patrons, programs, and services
    through online database and manual systems.
  • Continuously promote the value of literacy and reading, with an emphasis on reading as a
    lifelong skill.
  • Create promotional materials for the Library, including fliers and Social Media postings.
  • Develop and expand the skills and interest to work well with diverse populations.
  • Establish and maintain professional and courteous working relationships with co-workers,
    supervisors, other City personnel, and the public.
  • Assist at Belen Harvey House as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Employee may perform basic maintenance work-on City property as assigned. The duties listed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
  • In-depth knowledge of Young Adult literature and media.
  • Familiarity with grade-level educational curriculum adopted by the NM Public Education
    Department.
  • Equivalent to the completion of a four-year accredited college degree in education,
    library science, natural or social science, or other related fields and/or related life
    experience.
  • Able to develop proficiency with Library computer platforms and programs, and with
    Social Media.
  • Comfortable with fast-paced multi-tasking.
  • Able to work well with diverse populations.
  • Able to organize and perform work functions independently and to complete daily
    activities according to work schedule with minimal supervision.
  • Spanish Proficiency (preferred).
  • Must successfully pass a drug testing.
  •  Possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license.
