STEM to Read

Explora Science Museum and the New Mexico State Library are offering 2 new professional  development for workshops this fall for public library staff in New Mexico on utilizing the STEM to Read program.

Explore, Engage, Create
Integrating STEM and Literacy into Library Programs
Explora workshop for Librarians

Using simple everyday objects and materials, delight, engage and develop in children a strong appetite for learning. Engage in a fun, thought provoking workshop full of science activities integrated with literature and math which you can use in your library. We’ll take an inquiry approach to learning, actively exploring physical materials. Explora educators will model engagement with materials and facilitation questions to assist librarians in developing skills for supporting science learning and literacy in their libraries. You’ll then have the opportunity to develop your own activity for children 0-5 years of age and their adults that you can immediately use in your library programming.

10 am – 2:30 pm
We’ll have a 30 minute break for lunch. Please bring a sack lunch

Friday, September 14th @ the Rudolfo Anaya branch of The Public Library Albuquerque and Bernalillio County

Mother Goose on the Loose Early Literacy

The New Mexico State Library is offering 2, different, all-day, workshops this fall on the early literacy program, Mother Goose on the Loose. The workshops are led by the creator of Mother Goose on the Loose, Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen, and are free to attend for the staff of New Mexico’s public libraries. The workshops will be held 9-4 with an hour for lunch and all workshops materials will be provided to the participants. Be prepared to learn, have fun, and even present a mock-storytime with skills you learn during the session!

For more information on Mother Goose on the Loose please click here.

We’re offering 2 different Mother Goose on the Loose Workshops:

  • Play Your Way to Literacy Through STEM– a great follow-up to those that have attended a previous Mother Goose workshop and are looking to expand their MGOL skills or for first timers who are looking for additional storytime resources
    • Children learn through play; play is one of the five practices recommended in Every Child Ready to Read. Adults can also learn through play; in this workshop, participants sample playful activities while connecting them with school readiness domains and research that supports their value. Matching play with storytimes in appropriate ways and encouraging parents as play partners makes this workshop a valuable and joyous learning opportunity. Help children build social-emotional skills including self-regulation, problem solving, and mutual respect while providing opportunities for adult participants to also learn through play.
  • Using Mother Goose on the Loose to Nurture the Whole Childthis is the same workshop we offered at NMLA 2017 as well as at the Bayard Public Library, the Artesia Public Library and the Loma Colorado Main Library in Rio Rancho in March of 2018.
    • This interactive workshop will give you the tools to plan and facilitate the award winning, hands-on early literacy program, Mother Goose on the Loose, and increase the family engagement potential for your current programs. We will also explore the science regarding the human brain and early childhood development, and how your early childhood programs will positively impact children’s learning and family relationships.

Research suggests that our impact on early literacy learning is greatly multiplied by using the Whole Child Approach. The Whole Child Approach focuses not only on academic school readiness skills, but the foundation of the whole child including the critical components of safety, physical well-being and emotional and social growth.

Mother Goose on the Loose is an award winning early literacy program that is used in libraries around the county (and abroad) for parents with babies from birth to age two, although it has been successfully adapted for children up to age 5 as well. Easy to plan and easy to present, Mother Goose on the Loose seamlessly combines music, movement, books, rhymes, puppets, and fingerplays in fun ways that help children develop language and self-regulation skills.
