Land of Enchantment Book Award Winners for 2018

The Land of Enchantment Book Award  is a committee sponsored by both the New Mexico Library Association and the New Mexico Council of the International Reading Association which chooses 4 lists of books: Roadrunner (grades K-3), Coyote (grades 3-5), Lizard (grades 6-8), and Black Bear (grades 9-12). Then in April, children and teens across New Mexico vote on their favorite from the list in which they are a part of. The committee is made up of public and school librarians from around the state. We read lots of books in one or more categories then convene once a year (generally in October or November) and spend a day passionately arguing for our favorites to make the list of 10 titles. A book has to be read by 2 or more committee members  to even make it into contention.

Voting closed at the end of April and winners were announced on May 8th. They are:

  • Roadrunner: Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins
  • Coyote: Gingerbread for Liberty: How a German Baker Helped Win the American Revolution by Mara Rockliff
  • Lizard: Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt
  • Black Bear: Gabi: A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero

Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all the librarians, teachers and students of New Mexico for making this possible!
