JOB TITLE: Senior Library Technician (1/2-time)

JOB TYPE: Regular

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Community Services-Library (White Rock Branch)

SALARY: Salary range is $15.09/hr. to $22.25/hr.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year of library-related experience.
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment physical exam prior to commencing work.
  • If primary task includes Youth Services, must successfully complete a thorough background investigation.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Sr. Library Technician:

  • Additional year library-related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science, Library and Information Science, Humanities, or related field.
  • Familiarity with Library Services.
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license.

Position Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Sr. Librarian, Librarian or Designee, performs all basic library tasks including providing customer service throughout the library at multiple service points, assisting patrons in a courteous and friendly manner in using the library and in finding the information they need, and performing a variety of library support tasks that may include receiving and copy-cataloging materials, checking in and out materials, registering patrons for library cards, etc.  Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides customer service throughout the library at multiple service points. This may include working at Circulation, Reference, Youth Services, Technical Services and/or White Rock.
  • Registers new patrons and issues borrower identification cards that permit patrons to borrow books and other materials. Enters and updates patrons’ records on computers.
  • Works one-on-one with library patrons and recommends library materials. Assists patrons in finding and effectively using library resources, including on-line catalogs, self-check stations, and electronic databases.
  • Troubleshoots public use equipment.
  • Provides assistance to English language learners in language acquisition and the use of library materials.
  • Continues to learn and develop skills for using existing and emerging library technologies and instructing patrons on their usage as needed.
  • Reserves, circulates, renews and discharges books and other materials at the service desks.
  • Maintains records of items received, stored, issued, and returned.
  • Provides assistance in the maintenance of collections of books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, and audiovisual and other materials.
  • Sorts books, publications, and other items according to established procedure and returns them to shelves, files, or other designated storage areas.
  • Inspects returned books for condition and due-date status, and computes any applicable fines. Sends out notices and accepts fine payments for lost or overdue books.
  • Processes newly acquired library materials.
  • Reads book reviews of materials for assigned areas of the collection; recommends the addition of materials that will enhance the collection; participates in weeding the collection based on frequency of use and condition.
  • Performs clerical activities, such as filing, typing, word processing, photocopying, mailing out material, and mail sorting.
  • Repairs damaged books.
  • Delivers and retrieves items to and from departments and patrons.
  • Assists with the opening/closing of facility.
  • Assists with workstation maintenance, maintains sign up and monitors the study rooms, handles lost and found items and performs housekeeping duties.
  • Compiles and maintains records relating to circulation, materials, and equipment.
  • Takes actions to halt disruption of library activities by problem patrons.
  • Attends required training to maintain and enhance skills.
  • Promotes library collection and services, by creating displays, brochures, etc.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities for Senior Library Technician:

  • Provides classification/copy cataloguing of a variety of library materials by collection and by Dewey classification numbers; searches, edits, and transfers Machine Readable (MARC) records to the integrated library system. Maintains authority control.
  • Provides reference services, using proficiency in specialized indexes, reference sources and online databases.
  • Assists patrons with access to Internet services.
  • Assists patrons with access to a variety of downloadable materials including eBooks, downloadable audiobooks, etc.
  • Provide readers advisory services to patrons of all ages.
  • Provides assistance to educational providers by locating materials and helping to complete special projects.
  • Helps other staff, including new staff and cross-training staff, increase proficiency in performing library functions. Reconciles catalog with collection arrangement.
  • Receives, organizes and maintains library materials.
  • Provides classification/copy cataloging of a variety of library materials by collection and by Dewey classification numbers; searches, edits, and transfers MARC records to the ILS.
  • Compiles and maintains records relating to circulation, materials, and equipment.
  • Processes Interlibrary Loans.
  • Prepares volumes for binding.
  • Develops and conducts children’s programs and other specialized programs.
  • Compiles bibliographies and prepares abstracts on subjects of interest to particular organizations or groups.
  • Assists with the opening/closing of facility; may be in charge of building on weekends and/or evenings.
  • Contributes to the content of the library website and maintains local area networks.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk and stand. The employee regularly uses manual and finger dexterity and visual acuity to complete tasks. The employee routinely uses a full range of mobility in upper and lower body; reaches overhead; works in various positions, including stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling and squatting for extended periods of time. The employee must be able to lift, pull and push materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks; and be able to lift 50 pounds with the assistance of equipment or another person.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a library environment with a moderate noise level, occasionally working under stressful conditions and for extended periods of time.  This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones and photocopiers. Evening, holiday, and weekend work outside of normal business hours may be required as well as travel and attendance at meetings.
