Position Summary The Education, Consultation and Reference Services Division at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center seeks an experienced learner-centered Education and Research Librarian: Online Instructional Services. The successful incumbent understands the importance of lifelong learning in the health professions as well as the changing environment of technology and information literacy instruction in health sciences libraries. The Education and Research Librarian will apply learning theories, design principles, and technology to develop, implement, support, and maintain general and course-specific learning objects/modules and other library instruction materials for our credit courses and for course integrated sessions.

This position will report to the Division Head for Education, Consultation and Reference Services.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible faculty position with a primary appointment in HSLIC as an independent academic unit.

Appointment is posted as an open rank lecturer, to be determined based on qualifications. Salary range: $54,000 – $60,000.

Responsibilities:

  • Takes a primary role in developing a comprehensive online learning plan that includes learning objects, such as a repository of tutorials, exercises and assessment that are accessible through course management systems and the library systems.
  • Creates instructional materials and provides instruction to meet various information literacy, health literacy, and research needs of the campus (online and in person).
  • Advises library staff on creating digital learning objects; and develops and shares best practices for creating and assessing digital learning objects.
  • Utilizes awareness of multiple literacies, such as cultural and visual literacy to appropriately integrate them into online environments.
  • Investigates and applies, as appropriate, social media, gaming, and emerging modalities to engage learners.
  • Works with faculty and campus programs to integrate online library instruction into the curriculum.
  • Partners with instructors and instructional design specialists across the library and HSC in various teaching settings to support instruction sessions through online design.
  • Develops assessment of instruction practices and assesses efforts around online learning, including leveraging learning analytics data to improve student learning.
  • Develops research guides, with an emphasis on building in pedagogy to the resources.
  • Provides consultations on using and retrieving literature and effectively managing citations with citation management tools.
  • Participates on committees to support teaching, research, online initiatives, and clinical care activities.
  • Develops and evaluates online reference services/tools for students and faculty.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional service activities in order to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.

Institutional Information:

Located in Albuquerque, HSLIC serves the UNM College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of Population Health, School of Medicine, including its Health Professions programs, and two teaching hospitals. HSLIC serves the state’s health-information needs, including its 22 Native nations. The UNM HSC has earned a national and international reputation for its integrated education, patient care, research, and partnership initiatives, which address the unique healthcare needs of New Mexico’s urban and rural populations (http://hsc.unm.edu).  UNM is a flagship, research-intensive university with a student population of over 22,000.

Qualifications Required/Minimum:

  • Graduate Library or Information Science Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association
  • 2 years of experience in providing online learning instruction in an academic library
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred:

  • Education, study, or experience in instructional design, education theory, or similar field of study
  • Significant experience providing reference and instruction to learners in the health sciences
  • Experience with web design and graphics
  • Experience with learning management systems such as Blackboard Learn, Canvas, or Coursera
  • Experience designing instruction sessions or modules using standard information literacy competencies
  • Demonstrated experience with the theory and application of instructional design models
  • Experience with assessment practices for online instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to instruction
  • Experience building online research guides
