Blackdom, New Mexico

The reference librarians at the New Mexico State Library are working hard to continue to answer your research questions, despite these unusual times. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to check out the research guides available on our website. A wide variety of commonly requested research topics are covered including genealogy, Native American genealogy, water issues, state and federal documents, N.M. authors, and the New Mexico penitentiary riot.

Our most recent research guide gathers together some of the many resources available on the first African American community in New Mexico. Blackdom, N.M. was established in the early 1900’s in Chavez County and at its height, the town’s population was over 300. This research guide will direct you to photographs, online videos, newspaper articles, books, archival collections, and other important pieces of New Mexico’s history.

If you have any questions or need help using the guides, contact us. We are happy to help.

Happy Researching!
